Motorhome Has No Power When Plugged In? Here’s What To Check First

You plug your motorhome into shore power… and nothing happens. No outlets. No microwave. No air conditioner. Maybe even no lights.

Before assuming something major failed, work through this smart diagnostic checklist. Most “no power” issues are simple once you trace the system correctly.

Step 1: Check The Obvious First

Start outside the RV.

1. Is the campground pedestal breaker ON?

Sometimes it looks on but is partially tripped. Turn it fully OFF, then back ON.

2. Is the outlet actually live?

Test with:

  • A simple outlet tester

  • Another RV

  • A small appliance

Pedestals fail more often than people think.

Step 2: Inspect The Shore Power Cord

Look for:

  • Burned prongs

  • Loose plug

  • Melted plastic

  • Damaged cord

If the plug feels hot after use, there may be a bad connection.

Step 3: Check Your RV Main Breaker Panel

Inside your motorhome:

  1. Open the breaker panel

  2. Reset all breakers fully OFF then back ON

  3. Check for a tripped main breaker

Breakers can look normal but still be tripped.

Step 4: Test GFCI Outlets

One tripped GFCI can shut down multiple outlets.

Look for:

  • Bathroom outlet

  • Kitchen outlet

  • Exterior outlet

Press RESET firmly.

Step 5: Check The Transfer Switch

If you have a generator:

Your motorhome likely has an automatic transfer switch.
If this fails, shore power will not pass through.

Signs of transfer switch failure:

  • Clicking sounds

  • Burn smell

  • Power works on generator but not shore power

This requires inspection behind panels.

Step 6: Inspect The Converter

If:

  • 120V outlets work

  • But lights and 12V systems don’t

Your converter may have failed.

The converter:

  • Turns 120V into 12V power

  • Charges your batteries

Check:

  • Blown fuses

  • Cooling fan operation

  • Burned wiring

Step 7: Check The Batteries

Low or dead batteries can create strange symptoms.

Test:

  • Battery voltage

  • Corroded terminals

  • Loose connections

Even when plugged in, some systems rely on battery support.

Step 8: Surge Protector Issues

If you use an EMS or surge protector:

  • It may block power due to low voltage

  • Or reverse polarity detection

Check its display for error codes.

Step 9: Look For Burned Wiring

Warning signs:

  • Burning smell

  • Discolored wiring

  • Melted transfer switch housing

  • Buzzing sounds

If you see this, disconnect immediately.

Common Causes Ranked

  1. Tripped pedestal breaker

  2. Bad shore cord

  3. Tripped RV main breaker

  4. GFCI reset needed

  5. Transfer switch failure

  6. Converter failure

  7. Loose neutral connection

Loose neutral connections are especially dangerous and can damage appliances.

When You Should Call Professionals
